EGAT leads cooperation for RE imports to Thailand

The renewable energy will be used for green hydrogen and ammonia production.

The Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand, Électricité du Laos (EDL), Chiyoda Corporation, and Mitsubishi Company (Thailand) Ltd. signed a memorandum of cooperation to study importing renewable energy from Laos to Thailand for green hydrogen and ammonia production.

In a statement, EGAT said the parties will look into developing renewable energy certificates to enable the import of renewable energy.

Under the partnership, they will also look into business opportunities for green hydrogen and ammonia in Thailand, as well as overseas.

“EGAT found that the cost of electricity from renewable energy significantly impacts hydrogen price. Therefore, EGAT plans to study the utilization of hydropower generation in Lao PDR,” EGAT Governor Thepparat Theppitak said in a statement.

“In case that the cost of clean energy for green hydrogen production in Thailand decreases, the price of hydrogen will become competitive in both domestic and international markets, encouraging the development of hydrogen-related projects continuously,” he added.

Theppitak said this is a continuation of an MOC signed with Japanese companies in 2023 to develop clean hydrogen and ammonia production, adding that this will support Thailand’s net zero emissions goal.
